The Department of Therapeutics and Medicines Management (formerly Department of Experimental and Clinical Pharmacology, University of Natal) plays a leading role in training and research into the appropriate use of medicines in KwaZulu-Natal.

It is responsible for teaching therapeutics and medicines management to undergraduate medical and nursing students, while various types of postgraduate training are offered in the form of course work and research programmes.

Emphasis is on the rational, safe and effective use of medicines. Research interests, which include policy, medical education and population pharmacokinetics as well as more basic science research involving proteases, lead to a range of publications.

Staff members comprise six full-time academics and one support staff. There is one post graduate student currently registered for a postgraduate masters while one staff member is registered for a PhD.
